Bizenyaki Coffee Mug

Posted by Craftip (Jun 9, 2014)

I tried making pottery using a potter's wheel at a pottery lesson in Shouboku Togei no Sato. It was my first experience and I was nervous, but my instructor taught me very kindly and I was able to do it well. At first I had a hard time making the edge high, but at last I was able to do it.

1.

This is 600g clay.

2.

Divide it into half with a cutting string.

3.

4.

To remove air, round it by hand.

5.

6.

Place it on the wheel and make the bottom.

7.

And be aware of the center while turning the potter's wheel, and determine the size of the bottom pressing the clay down.

8.

Give a dent with your thumb in the center part and continue pressing down.

9.

Gradually enlarge the hole to be the same thickness.

10.

Check the thickness of the bottom using a needle.

11.

Gradually heighten the edge.

12.

True up the height of the edge by a needle.

13.

Detach the part of the mouth.

14.

Using some tanned leather, prepare a smooth edge.

15.

Spin the wheel constantly and press the clay down lightly.

16.

Trim away excess clay to shape the bottom using a trimming tool.

17.

Wet the fingers and smooth the outside of the bottom.

18.

Disconnect the mug from the wheel by a cutting thread.

19.

Form clay to a cylindrical shape and make a handle part.

20.

Attach the handle part to the body and smoothen the joint portion.

21.

Hold the joint portion from the inside of the mug.
It took about one hour to complete a handmade Bizenyaki coffee mug.
They will bake it in the kiln and send it to my house later.
